Does your colour fade? (Can you slow it down?)

Colour fade is something we all notice…
but it can feel frustrating when it happens sooner than expected.

If your hair starts to feel dull, warmer, or just not quite the same a few weeks after your appointment… you’re not imagining it. Most of the time, it’s not about needing more colour, it’s about what happens after you leave the salon.

Firstly, not all hair holds colour the same way.

The condition of your hair and its porosity (how your hair absorbs and holds moisture) play a big role. Hair that is more porous often from lightening, heat, or general wear over time, may absorb colour quickly, but also lose it just as fast. Whereas healthier, less porous hair tends to hold onto colour for longer and fade more softly.

If your colour seems to “wash out” quicker than others… this is often why. It’s not just the colour, it’s the condition of the hair it’s sitting on.

Why colour fades

Hair colour sits within the structure of your hair, and over time, that structure is affected by everyday life.

Things like:

  • Washing your hair frequently
  • Hot water opening the cuticle
  • Heat styling without protection
  • Sun exposure
  • Mineral build-up from water
  • Using products that aren’t suited to your hair

All of these can slowly shift your colour, making it feel less vibrant or not quite as soft and shiny.

You might notice it more around your face or through your ends first, that’s usually where the hair is more delicate.

The good news is, a few small changes can make a big difference.

Wash with care
Use a shampoo and conditioner suited to your scalp and hair. Try not to over wash, and keep the water temperature warm rather than hot.

Protect from heat
Heat protection isn’t optional, it helps keep the hair cuticle smoother, which means your colour stays in place longer.

Be mindful of your environment
Sun, chlorine, and even your home water can all affect your colour. A gentle cleanse every so often can help remove build-up.

Add hydration
Well-conditioning your hair create a smoother cuticle, allowing colour to stay in place for longer, especially in more porous hair.

Be gentle
Brushing, tight ties, and general wear and tear all affect the condition of your ends and that’s where fade often shows first.

If your colour hasn’t been feeling like itself lately, it might not need more colour just a little more care.
