Self Care Isn’t Always Bubble Baths
When you hear the phrase “self-care,” what comes to mind? For many of us, the image is soft and dreamy like a bubble bath with candles, a face mask, maybe a good book. And while that sounds wonderful, self-care isn’t always about fluffy robes and bath bombs. Sometimes, it looks a little different and that’s a good thing.
Self-care is simply about doing something that nurtures you, that leaves you feeling restored and more like yourself. For some people, that might be a quiet night in. For others, it might be a walk in nature, a solo coffee date, or yes, even getting their hair done.
Your Hair Appointment as Self-Care
A hair appointment can be so much more than a box you tick on your to-do list. In the right environment, it’s a pause, a moment to step out of the busyness of life and focus entirely on yourself. No laundry, no emails, no kids asking what’s for dinner. Just you, your hair, and a little time to reset.
That’s why I approach every appointment with intention. From the moment you step into the salon, it’s about creating a space where you feel relaxed and looked after. Your colour isn’t rushed, your cut isn’t cookie-cutter, everything is tailored to you. The products I use are gentle and low-tox, so your hair stays healthy and your scalp happy.
And let’s not forget the best part: the massage. (Because really, is it even a hair appointment if you don’t get that blissful few minutes at the basin?) A scalp massage isn’t just relaxing. It encourages blood flow, supports healthy hair growth, and can leave you feeling calmer for hours afterward.
More Than “Maintenance”
For many people, colouring their hair feels like maintenance, a chore to squeeze into their already full calendar. But what if it didn’t have to feel that way? What if you saw your appointment as time for you, not just time taken from you?
A custom colour or cut can completely shift how you feel when you look in the mirror. It can make mornings easier, help you feel more polished and confident, and give you that little extra spark to show up as your best self; at work, at home, everywhere. That’s the magic of a “lived-in” look: it grows out beautifully, meaning you don’t have to be back in the salon every six weeks to keep it looking fresh.
Self-Care That Works for You
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to self-care. For some, a trip to the hair salon is their quiet, meditative time. For others, it’s a social catch-up, a place to chat, laugh, and feel lighter (inside and out) when they leave.
Whatever it means for you, I want you to know that your appointment is a safe space to just be. Wear slippers, bring a book, work on your laptop if you need to, or simply close your eyes and enjoy the moment.
Because self-care doesn’t always look like a bubble bath. Sometimes, it looks like a fresh colour, a gentle scalp massage, and an hour or two where the world waits outside while you take care of you.
